He was born on April 1, 1977, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His early life was full of tragedy when his sister, Priscila, disappeared in 2004, allegedly linked to a kidnapping case involving drug debts. Vitor comes from a mixed heritage of Greek and Brazilian, and Brazilian, descent.

Vitor began boxing under Claudio Coelho at the age of 12. Later, he pursued Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the legendary Carlson Gracie.
